Rua Soeiro Pereira Gomes, 2448, Carvalhais, Gestaçô, Baião
The first cane workshops appeared in Gestaçô in the late 19th century. The great promoter of this craft was Alexandre Pinto Ribeiro who, in 1902, set up his workshop there. He used an innovative technique, the bending technique, i.e., a technique based on the bending of wood ends softened in water at high temperatures and with the help of a metal bar, which allows taking advantage of larger amounts of raw material and obtaining products with a higher quality.
The Casa das Bengalas de Gestaçô has three areas: the reception, where the various models of walking sticks and other local products are on display; an intermediate area, with an interactive mural and historical context; and, finally, the third area, which displays various tools and artefacts used in the production of walking sticks, as well as a display case with antique pieces.
