Interpretative Centre of the Church of Veade - Rota do Românico
SCHEDULE A VISIT

The Interpretative Centre of the Church of Veade was inaugurated on 14 July 2024.

Located in a building adjacent to the church, this interpretative centre explores the main historical, architectural and symbolic aspects of the Church of Saint Mary of Veade, from its origins to the present day.

The museum project highlights a set of decorated stones (consisting of voussoirs, friezes and capitals) that belonged to the main portal or triumphal arch of the original Romanesque church, which was dismantled in 1732.

The Church of Veade was founded in the Medieval Period and its structure was probably built in the 13th century; it underwent deep interventions in the 17th and 18th centuries, by initiative of powerful lords of the Order of Malta.

From the Romanesque building, only the north and south lateral portals remain; their ornamentation connects this Church to the medieval temples of the Tâmega and Douro basins and is a glimpse of the monumentality of the primitive Romanesque construction.
