We need to return to the steps we've taken, to repeat them, and to outline new paths."Inspired by the literary work of José Saramago (1922-2010), and commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of the writer awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998, we propose a journey along the Route of the Romanesque through the eyes of the author who travelled across the length and breadth of the country, between October 1979 and July 1980, in his Journey to Portugal.

In the Route of the Romanesque

"Along the Route of the Romanesque" or, if you prefer, an incursion into the unique national heritage and history, making for a remarkable and enriching experience. Starting at the Penafiel railway station, the programme includes a few mandatory stops at the Interpretation Centre of the Romanesque and the old Benedictine monasteries of Pombeiro and Travanca. Relaxed and flavourful moments are in store for you at the historic centre of Amarante and Quinta da Tapada…

A Day in the Romanesque - Benedictine Monasteries

The Tâmega and Sousa, a treasure well-kept in northern Portugal, a mild climate, beautiful landscapes, fine wines and hospitable people, holds a unique collection of Romanesque monuments, where nobility and religious orders have played a key role in its organization and settlement. Castles, towers, bridges, memorials, monasteries and churches make this area a perfect combination of culture and leisure.

Route of the Romanesque by Mountain Bike

If you enjoy outdoor adventure and sports, the Route of the Romanesque and the Kunalama/ADPortela BTT group challenge you to get to discover some of the monuments of the Route of the Romanesque in an original way. There are trails for one morning (20km or 45km), an entire day (60km or 75km), or even for a two-day getaway.
